A Note From Fran
Treat Yourself
Have you been to the mall lately. Even if you don't celebrate the holidays, (my family and I do not), going to the mall or anywhere that's selling toys, trinkets or gadgets during this time of the year….is truly taking your life into your own hands. There are lines, crying babies, parking nightmares and many other frustrations to leave you exhausted and fatigued to say the least.

So of course, my number one question I ask like to ask clients these days is "so what have you done for yourself this week." Understandably this season of the year is all about thinking of others, but for many of us we do that to such an extreme that we often neglect our own health and wellbeing. For instance, instead of being on autopilot, really examine how you look and feel. Are you cranky and irritable for no real reason? Have you lost interest in your regular fitness routine? Do you even have one…actually don't answer that. I prefer to think the readers of our newsletter all have fitness routines!

If you haven't felt light, full of energy or rejuvenated lately perhaps it's time to think about what you CAN do to get there; so that you finish the 2006 year with a bang…and a fresh new outlook for the year to come.

Treat yourself to a massage and facial. Take a 1/2 or full day and visit a friend you haven't seen in a while. The point is in order to recharge or renew our minds and bodies we have to shakeup the routine; otherwise, life will stay stale and boring and out of balance. The feature article "Simplify Your Life Through a Hectic Season" will also give you a few ideas to think about too. Until next time stay grounded and keep it light.

In love and good health,

Simplify Your Life Through a Hectic Season

For many, this is the month when your resolve will be most tested. Can you stay focused and balanced during a hectic holiday season; keeping exercise and mindful eating habits a priority? Would you like to enter the New Year refreshed and energized…ready for new challenges?

In the October 2006 issue of Entrepreneur magazine, Robert Kiyosaki, author of the Rich Dad book series, wrote an article titled "In Control." He asks the question, "But what actually brings health, wealth, and happiness. Is it success, and success alone?" He says that the pursuit of success does not automatically bring health and wealth. This conjures up thoughts for me of the numerous diet programs and pills offering success that in the end leave people worse off than before. That is not health.

Mr. Kiyosaki asserts that our pursuit of happiness can cause health and wealth problems. In the case of health, people who eat and drink to be happy have only found a temporary high, and the end result, if this behavior is a habit, is poor health and excess weight.

He says one factor, in particular, that is shown to help entrepreneurs lead happy, healthier, and wealthier lives is self-control. As an entrepreneur, that makes perfect sense to me. In fact, it makes sense, period, entrepreneur or not.

Doing the right thing, whether or not we feel like it in the moment, leads to long-term happiness. Think about a time you were in school or working on an important project. While putting in the time to study, research, write, make phone calls - whatever was required to produce the end result - may not have been your first choice of activity in the moment, the end result likely produced happiness. Think about the dissatisfaction that results from not doing the necessary actions. Have you experienced that before?

During this season when festivities, overeating and over-drinking often abounds, think of two promises you can make to yourself (e.g. "I will fit in at least ten minutes of exercise every day" or "I will eat a fruit or vegetable at each meal"), and keep these promises. At this time of year, when most people feel crazed and out of control, you can happily experience the freedom of self-control…staying balanced and in good health! (No pun intended).

Cassie Trotter - Manager of Corporate Programs a.k.a. "Tri-athlete in the Making"

After years of saying 'I want to be a triathlete' I finally became one...

When Fran asked me to write a segment for this month's newsletter, I thought, "who wants to hear from me?' I've been with the company for less than a year, and I really don't have a lot interesting or exciting to share.

It was while creating an announcement for our "Fall into Fitness" and "Step it up in the New Year" promotions that I realized I do have something interesting to share with our readers. This past year, I accomplished a goal I had been setting for myself since New Years Day 2003 - 3 Triathlons in one season. I am sure this sounds familiar to you. You set a goal, start on the track to achieving it, and then Life gets in the way. Well, for me that was the precisely the scenario.

As a competitive swimmer from grade school through college, I thought that triathlon would come easy for me. I mean, ride a bike and run? I can do that, piece of cake. It's the swimming that's the hard part. Right? Wrong.

The challenge with triathlon and the challenge with meeting most of our fitness goals is finding the time and finding the motivation. How do we work, spend time with our family and friends, and find time and motivation to walk, run, bike, swim or lift weights?

The answer for me was to find individuals that could keep me motivated. So, I joined the DC Triathlon Club; a group of like-minded amateur athletes that train together, socialize together and keep each other motivated. And through this group, I found other individuals that had set goals and failed to achieve their goals in the past.

As a result of my involvement in this group I exceeded my goals. Not only did I complete 3 triathlons, but I participated at a highly competitive level and I even won one of them! And I have set even loftier goals for next season! (We'll keep you posted on these!)

My advice to you: rally your friends, coworkers and family, talk about your goals and see what you have in common. You'd be surprised at how a little support can go a long way.

Cassie's 2006 Race Results:

Iron Girl Triathlon, Columbia, MD - .62 mile swim/17.5 mile bike/3.2 mile run - 11th in age group

Nations Triathlon, Washington, DC - 1.8m run/19.8 mile bike/6.2 mile run - 2nd in age group
