Making the Most of Community
I caught an Oprah show the other day on doing neighborly things and I really enjoyed it. Oprah has truly mastered the idea of giving of oneself because she does it on a grand scale (i.e. the BIG GIVE & Katrina). Also in less media intensive ways such as what she did on the show I was watching.
She decided that the neighbors living across from her Harpo Studios in Chicago needed balcony makeovers. So she flew in this garden and landscaping expert from Australia and redid about 25 balconies of her neighbors that lived in the condominium across the street. It was a total surprise for her neighbors, as she arrived on a cherry picker and bullhorn outside their balconies early one morning to announce her grand idea. It made them feel great about their condos, themselves, their neighborhood (or in this case condo building), and of course Oprah Winfrey.
There are so many opportunities to make our communities better. You don't have to look too far to get involved if you REALLY want to make a difference. Our company is embarking on an initiative this summer and fall with the DC Public Schools to help tutor young people who need a little help in their junior and senior years. We'd love you to join us! 7 Ways to Reduce "Brain" Drain
Take a moment and look at your life. Are you getting enough physical exercise? Do you eat balanced nutritious meals daily? Do you sleep 7.5 - 8.0 hours per night? Are you drinking lots of water? Getting enough sunlight…and the list goes on.
If your answer to most of these questions is NO...then you're probably a victim of "brain" drain also known as stress, which the dictionary defines as "mental, emotional, or physical strain caused, e.g. by anxiety or overwork. It may cause such symptoms as raised blood pressure or depression."
So when is the last time you spent an afternoon just having plain old fun…when you weren't on vacation? They say laughing is good medicine. Ever notice how much children laugh? It can support our mental and physical health and wellbeing.
Perhaps you could make a few positive changes in your life based on the questions above. Here are a few quick ideas to get you started. See if you can add 3 more. Put the list on your desk at work and see how many of these well-being techniques YOU can master on a daily basis:
1 - Smile at everyone you see.
2 - Hold the door open when you see someone walking for it.
3 - Blow your horn ONLY for emergencies.
4 - Play ball with your kids or baby-sit for a friend (kids only know fun.)
5 - Look up at the sky and create a story about what you see.
6 - Walk a dog.
7 - Listen to the birds when they sing.
